The Brief
Refurbishment of existing old railway Pattern Store into offices.
The Challenge
The existing structure had limited floor to ceiling height posing great challenges where all services had to be replaced. The building was vacant for many years and required intense cleaning. The isolated position also provided no parking opportunities.
The Result
The new design incorporated the character of the old Pattern Store that was used to make models and moulds for prototype train parts. Salvaged parts and old service pipe was emphasised in the new design.
In order to accommodate all the departments that required new office space, the client had to grow with the idea of having a completely open plan office with hot seats. Managers and senior staff could have glass box offices that still allowed natural light to filter into the building. Atriums were cut through the existing floors to enhance air flow and bring light deep into the building. The existing roof was replaced with a series of monitor roofs that bathe the interior spaces in light. Steel and glass boardrooms punch through the walls breaking the monotone facades, offering wider views.
