Medupi and Kusile

The Brief

Design of all buildings required for the new power stations.

The Challenge

The design team convinced the clients to steer away from the usual corrugated steel and brick boxes that define power stations and embrace a new aesthetic.

The Result

During the planning process a few buildings were identified and grouped together to receive a design make-over. The new aesthetic incorporated oval shaped portal frames that opened up interior spaces. The resulting cylinder-like buildings were arranged in a series of linked tubes.
